The next line is the end tag for the head section. This declares the character encoding of the document to be utf-8, a character set that contains almost all human language characters. The meta tag contains an attribute called charset.

Inside the head section, the title tag tells the browser the title to display on the browser tab. The types of tags that can be added to the head include links to resources and metadata. The contents of the head are not meant to be displayed on the web page, but they contain information that is used by the browser when displaying the page. The head is the first section of the page. The page is divided into head and body sections. End tags include the slash (/) character before the tag name. Many, though not all, HTML tag structures start with a start tag and end with an end tag. It starts a set of tags that the browser will read, finishing with the tag. The globe is driven by ArcGIS API for JavaScript. The code behind the platform is open source and can be reused by anyone. The Half-Earth Project Map provides an interactive summary of progress toward this goal, offered as a tool to help contextualize global datasets of biodiversity, human encroachment, and protection. GIS is at the core of determining which places to protect. This information is then used to identify the places and species most in need of conservation action. The Half-Earth Project is working to safeguard global biodiversity through detailed mapping of biodiversity, protected areas, and human activities. Half-Earth is a call to protect half the land and sea in order to manage sufficient habitat to slow down the species extinction crisis and ensure the long-term health of our planet. We are living in the sixth mass extinction.
